Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch
Red Shoulder Ranch® Chardonnay is a single-vineyard wine produced from grapes grown in the Carneros appellation. Shafer’s Red Shoulder Ranch vineyard is planted to five different Chardonnay clones selected for their small clusters, low yields and distinctive flavors. The wine is fermented using the yeasts that grow wild in Carneros, which adds an extra dimension of complexity. It is spared malolactic fermentation in order to retain abundant natural flavors and acidity. The wine remains in barrel for 15 months, with the lees stirred weekly by hand to create a rich, creamy texture.

A vibrant, juicy style built to age, this teems with tight grapefruit, lemon and lime flavors, offering a refreshingly clean and precise core of green apple and nectarine notes. Shows no sign of malolactic fermentation, keeping this fresh and lively. Drink now.-J.L.

The 2013 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch looks like one of their all-time greats, and to date they’ve all been very impressive wines. The crisp tangerine, honeyed citrus, pear and white peach notes are prominent in this beautifully fruited medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that shows additional orange marmalade notes in the mouth. It’s textured, crisp acid, from having not gone though malolactic, gives it focus and zest, and the overall impression is one of brilliant richness subtly touched by smoke, but letting the fruit dominate.
