Our Newest Eagle Rare Single Barrel

We have said time and again, “Do not use age to determine what is good or not good when selecting your barrels”.  Typically, barrels will begin to come into their own at around 5yrs and find their sweet spot by around 12yrs, although every barrel is different.  Well, it is time to contradict ourselves…

The market is getting flooded with younger barrels and we do our homework on them. With so many new players in the game, we do a lot of tasting and have found a few great things in that 5-6yr range but there are a lot more that we have found to be mediocre or worse. (SIDE NOTE:  One exception to the mediocrity in the 5-6 year age range is our Pinhook 6yr which will become available in the next few weeks.  It is a huge step up from last year’s 5yr, but more on that to come…).  Having spent a week tasting a number of average 5 and 6 year offerings, we sat down with this set of Eagle Rare 10yr samples and were reminded of what only age can add.  High tones, low tones, a great nose, mid palate and finish. It is wonderfully complex and mature.

So, while I continue to believe that picking solely on age is a mistake and that choosing a 10yr barrel over a 9yr barrel just because it has another year in wood is a bad idea, I do have to admit that we have had four barrels this year that have been aged between 10-18yrs and each of them has been wonderful and more generous than the younger samples we have passed on so often in 2021. Time will be a friend as the coming years play out and we expect many of these younger whiskeys to find their way to our program, but for now, we are very thankful for opportunities like this Eagle Rare 10yr Single Barrel!

We will release 100 bottles to online customers on Friday night.  The link below will go live at 9:30 pm on Friday night.  For those who miss out on the online release, we will offer an additional 100 bottles in the store beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday morning.  Whether shopping online or in the store, each customer will be limited to the purchase of a single bottle.

Cheers,

Patrick
